How to choose a home sauna: fit, installation and total cost

A sauna can be a cabin you assemble or a room you build. That difference changes the budget, the work and the buying process. Start with the installation you can actually support, then compare the products.

Quick decision: for a custom indoor infrared room, compare SaunaCloud Atlas and Sierra designs. For a prefabricated two-person infrared cabin, inspect SunRay Sierra 200K. For the stone-heater experience, use the traditional path in the finder.

1. Infrared or traditional: choose the experience

Infrared cabins use radiant heaters; traditional saunas heat a room using a sauna heater. These are different experiences, so start with your heat preference rather than a list of decorative extras. An infrared product's heater-surface temperature is not its room-air temperature. Compare model-specific operating information and instructions.

2. Custom room or prefabricated cabin?

Buying pathConsider it whenVerify before paying
Custom infrared roomYou want the finish and bench plan designed for your space.Approved drawing, scope of supply, trades, circuit and final installed quote.
Prefabricated indoor cabinYou can accommodate a fixed footprint and capacity.External dimensions, access route, assembly clearance and outlet.
Outdoor traditional kitYou want a separate garden sauna with a stone heater.Foundation, weather suitability, heater package and local installation requirements.

3. How much room do you need?

Write down the available width, depth and height. Include doorway swing, ventilation, service access and the manufacturer's installation clearances. Then measure the delivery route: doorways, turns, stairs and the location where freight can be unloaded.

For seating, distinguish sitting from reclining and count the people using the sauna together. A “5+ people” preference needs a confirmed bench plan; it is not a specification supplied by a calculator. Ask for packed dimensions as well as assembled dimensions.

4. What will the finished sauna cost?

Build your budget from six lines: cabin or system; heater and controls; freight and tax; base or room preparation; electrical work; assembly or contractor labor. Ask who supplies each item. A cabin price can omit a heater, while a custom sauna-system quote can omit the room and trades.

If the seller's total exceeds your limit, compare a smaller layout or a different buying path before paying a deposit. Our cost calculator is an estimate, not an installation bid.

5. Electrical planning comes before ordering

Send the exact manual and approved electrical specification to your installer. Do not carry a breaker requirement from one sauna to another, even within a brand. Custom projects require their own electrical plan. Confirm the cost and practicality of the connection before choosing a model.

6. Models to investigate

SaunaCloud Atlas and Sierra: custom infrared construction

Atlas uses a modern cedar treatment; Sierra uses a classic cedar arrangement. Both follow a custom layout rather than a fixed people count. Obtain a design proposal covering your room, benches and configuration. The supplied system and the room construction are separate scopes.

For these custom projects, obtain an all-in quotation including the work your trades supply, delivery and the approved electrical connection. Read component-specific warranty coverage; a headline lifetime warranty is not a promise that every part and repair cost is covered indefinitely.

SunRay Sierra 200K: prefabricated indoor infrared

This is a separate product from SaunaCloud Sierra. The listing specifies up to two people, an exterior footprint of 48 × 45 inches and a height of 75 inches. It calls for a dedicated 120V, 15A outlet, with 1,665W stated power. Use the current manual to confirm installation clearances.

Traditional sauna paths

For an indoor one-to-two-person sauna, investigate the SunRay Aston 200TN. For outdoor use, the finder includes SaunaLife CL3G, G2 and E8 capacity paths. Check the heater configuration and complete installation total at the seller. We do not have a verified indoor traditional match for every larger capacity.

7. Delivery, returns and warranty: questions to send the seller

8. Outdoor installation needs its own plan

Use an outdoor-approved product. Check the site base, drainage, electrical route and local requirements before ordering. A custom outdoor design needs approval for the intended climate and site. Do not assume an indoor cabin becomes outdoor-rated under a roof.

What we would do next

Choose the heat type, measure your space, set an installed budget and request a named model's manual or a custom proposal. Compare the confirmed costs and seating rather than ordering on a generic headline.
